Time Capsule

We are all doing things differently to what we would usually be doing: not going to school; parents may be working from home; the shops are running out of toilet paper; we can’t play out in the park. One key skill in history is using first hand recounts to learn about the past. In the future, people will want to know what life was like for children during this outbreak.

For today’s challenge, create a time capsule. A time capsule is a box of items and information, usually intended as a deliberate method of communication with future people, and to help people in the future learn about what life was like today.

All you will need is a plastic box. You may wish to decorate it before putting some objects inside it, which remind you of this time. A good idea would be to write a letter to someone in the future explaining what is currently happening and how your life is different to how it usually is. If you can, bury it in the garden or hide it away at the back of a cupboard. You may wish to dig it up in a few years time to remember what happened in 2020.

Another day, another useful website! Thank you to Mrs Nagra for finding this one:

If your child likes doing answer questions, then they will love this website. It has quizzes for Years 1 to 6 on a wide range of subjects and topics. Simple click on your relevant Key Stage – you don’t need to sign up! Enjoy!

Tallest Tower Challenge

Good morning, Cannon Park! For today’s challenge, I’d like you to build the tallest tower you can. You may wish to use Lego, Duplo, wooden blocks or even the blocks from Jenga – whatever you can find (with your grown-ups permission of course) to build your tower.

Key Questions

Would it help to plan our your tower?

Can you build a tower taller than your height?

How big is your tower? How could you measure the height?

How many blocks have you used?

How did you make sure it doesn’t collapse? Think about a strong base.

How many attempts did it take? What did you change each time?

You will definitely need our school values for this challenge, particularly teamwork if you’re working with a brother or sister! To extend your learning, research famous tall buildings around the world and create a factfile.

As always, send any photos to website@cannonpark.coventry.sch.uk if you are happy for them to go on the website.

Good luck!

Elmer

For today’s activity, I’ve been inspired by one of my favourite book characters – Elmer! Elmer the Patchwork Elephant is a children’s picture book series by the British author David McKee. Elmer is often used to celebrate diversity so in a time when we can’t be in school, why not create your very own Elmer to bring us together!

You will need:

  • a cleaned out plastic milk container – a 4 pint one is perfect – and an adult to cut the bottle to the right shape
  • coloured paper cut into small squares
  • PVA glue
  • patience

Don’t forget, email your Elmers to website@cannonpark.coventry.sch.uk
